Ruthin Castle has seen the completion of a £2 million pound refurbishment and development programme. The hotel has been transformed with the support of HSBC Bank and the Welsh Government’s Tourism Investment Support Scheme, earning the Visit Wales 4 Star Hotel grade, Investors in People Award and also creating the major addition of The Moat Spa.
The Moat Spa was officially opened on the 14th November 2012 by Rt Hon. David Jones, Secretary of State for Wales. Mr Jones said:
“It is a great pleasure to be invited to open The Moat Spa today. The fact that it will be making such good use of the rich supply of Welsh ingredients for its treatments is also testament to the standard of produce we have to offer here in Wales. The hotel and its new spa will be a great asset for North Wales tourism and I am pleased to wish it every success.”
The privately owned castle hotel in North Wales which is steeped in medieval and romantic history, announces the official unveiling of its exciting and pioneering new spa, The Moat Spa which features a number of wellbeing innovations including the UK’s first outdoor sauna tent. In the same way that Ruthin Castle is no ordinary hotel, The Moat Spa is no ordinary spa.
The Moat rests in the rustic woodlands of this ancient castle’s moat and represents a new concept in luxury social spa experiences, incorporating indoor and outdoor spaces and including a sauna tent pitched in the middle of the castle moat. This very special spa draws heavily on its majestic North Wales setting in both its design and use of quality local ingredients in its unique range of treatment products. It is further influenced by a wide range of cultures from around the globe producing a wellbeing experience which is simply unforgettable. The owners of the hotel, Anthony & Amanda Saint Claire said:

Outdoors, The Moat Spa offers a range of spa facilities enabling guests to enjoy the fresh air and natural Welsh beauty whatever the weather. This comprises a steaming Dutch hot tub with sense-tingling seaweed and herbs, a cooling spring water shower fed by the Clwydian mountain tops, a fire pit for BBQs and spit roasts and cosy cocoon swinging from the trees where guests can while away the hours. Indoors, The Moat Spa offers a series of spring water and mineral rich filled hot tubs of varying temperatures, thermal rooms and a mud bath using rich Welsh mud. In addition there are 5 treatment rooms including a VIP couple’s room with copper bath and private steam room, a Moёt in the Moat champagne nail bar and relaxation room complete with king-size loungers.
One UK spa industry professional summed up by saying:
“The spa does look amazing and so spacious, it really does compete with the best in the UK and is very unique”.
The project is expected to directly create another 40 jobs at the hotel but is also spreading a little more magic by helping to secure jobs in the construction industry, increasing purchases from the hotel’s suppliers; by drawing more visitors spend into the Welsh Border region.
